Stem Cell Therapy in Indonesia: Regenerative Technology for Future Health

Stem cell therapy is an innovation in regenerative medicine that is increasingly being discussed in Indonesia.

This technology is believed to have significant potential in assisting tissue repair, improving quality of life, and even supporting the treatment of various health conditions. It's no wonder that stem cell therapy is often referred to as a form of treatment of the future.

At the 2024 Indonesia Wellness Tourism International Festival (IWTIF), Dr. Sandy Q. Lintang, M.Biomed, Director of the Stem Cell and Cancer Institute at PT Kalbe and President Director of the Regenerative Stem Cell Development and Manufacturing at PT Bifarma Adiluhung, explained various important facts about stem cell therapy, from how it works to how to choose a safe therapy.

What Are Stem Cells?

Stem cells are stem cells that have the ability to reproduce and develop into various types of cells in the body. This ability makes stem cells play a crucial role in the regeneration and repair of damaged tissue.

The human body naturally possesses stem cells that respond to injuries, wounds, infections, or inflammation. These cells help repair tissue so the body can function properly again.

How Does Stem Cell Therapy Work?

According to Dr. Sandy Q. Lintang, stem cell therapy uses living cells. Therefore, it is administered intravenously to keep the cells alive and functioning optimally in the body.

Stem cells work through the active substances they produce, namely secretomes and exosomes, which have three main functions:

- Helping reduce inflammation (anti-inflammatory).

- Helping balance the body's immune system.

- Supporting regeneration or the formation of new cells to replace damaged ones.

Through these mechanisms, stem cell therapy is expected to help the body accelerate its natural recovery process.

Why Does Stem Cell Function Decline with Age?

As we age, the number and quality of natural stem cells in the body decline. As a result, the body's ability to repair tissue is not as good as when we were younger.

In addition to age, unhealthy lifestyles such as lack of sleep, an unbalanced diet, prolonged stress, smoking, and lack of exercise can also accelerate the decline in stem cell function.

Therefore, maintaining a healthy lifestyle remains the primary step in maintaining good health.

Be Careful When Choosing Stem Cell Therapy

Not all products claiming to be stem cells actually contain stem cells.

According to Dr. Sandy, stem cells are living cells, so proper therapy is administered intravenously. If a product in the form of capsules, tablets, powders, or drinks claims to be stem cells, it is not stem cell therapy.

The public also needs to pay attention to the source of the stem cells used.

Stem cell sources considered safer include:

- Fatty tissue (adipose tissue).

- Bone marrow.

- Umbilical cord.

Conversely, stem cells derived from embryos or fetuses have various ethical considerations and potential risks, requiring caution.

Dr. Sandy also reminded the public to be wary of offers of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) sold over the counter, as their use requires strict scientific and medical considerations.

Furthermore, quality stem cell therapy should come from pharmaceutical companies that meet Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) standards and comply with applicable regulations, ensuring product safety and quality.

Stem Cells with a Wellness Approach at Etnaprana Wellness Clinic

One interesting approach in Indonesia is the combination of regenerative medicine technology and the holistic wellness concept implemented at Etnaprana Wellness Clinic.

The Etnaprana concept combines medical therapy with various supporting approaches such as aromatherapy, massage, and relaxation treatments. According to Dr. Sandy, this combination can help create a more comfortable body condition and reduce stress, thus supporting the overall recovery process.

The wellness approach also aims to help improve quality of life through a balance between physical, mental, and emotional health.
