Not only are they believed to be able to maintain body stamina, essential oils can also suppress stress and even excessive fear with the right mixture.

This will be discussed in more depth through the presentation of Dr. Richard Sabar Nelson Siahaan M.Sc., MARS, as the Indonesian Ethnowellness Doctors Association at the 2023 Indonesia Wellness Tourism International Festival (IWTIF).

According to him, essential oils have two effectiveness, namely locally and systemically.

"Locally, it is applied directly to the skin. Systemically, it can be applied to the respiratory tract, nervous system, blood vessels and has a comprehensive effect," said Richard.

He explained that the above types of aromatherapy are widely available in Indonesia.

"There are lots of these in Indonesia, so it's not hard to find," said Richard.

"But we don't choose it haphazardly, so we have to be able to smell what the quality is like, for example the viscosity, the smell must be able to be studied if the oil is real oil," he added.

Difference between carrier and base oil

Carrier oil

Oils are used to carry essential oil molecules that aim to have therapeutic effects where they are needed, but the oil itself does not have a therapeutic effect

"The ingredients used to dissolve essential oils are more about mixing the oils so they mix," explained Richard.

Base oil

The oil used not only carries essential oil molecules which aim to obtain a therapeutic effect but works synergistically with essential oils to obtain the desired therapeutic effect.

The art of mixing essential oils for body health

The way to mix essential oils is usually called blending by note.

Blending by note is also widely used by perfume sellers, but we can use the blending by note technique, the extraction is also different

"There are three types of notes (aroma), so if the base note evaporates in 24 hours, the top note takes 15 minutes and the middle note after 30 minutes," explained Richard.

The top note is an oil that has a light and fresh aroma, which is the first smell after being applied to the skin

Therapeutic dose: 3-25 drops for every 30 ml of base oil.

Middle notes are oils that have a longer evaporation time, often called heart notes because of their inspiring effect on a person.

Therapeutic dose: 2-10 drops for every 30 ml of base oil.

Meanwhile, the base note is the main oil that must be present in every blend and mixed first.

Therapeutic dose is 1-5 drops for every 30 ml of base oil

example: top note basil oil, middle note jasmine oil and base note ginger oil.

Dr. Richard also gave an example of the art of mixing essentials for body health, such as making massage oil.

"Massage oil, for example top note 3, middle note 2 and base note 1," he concluded.
