Launching from Get-nails.com, this trend has its roots in Hollywood in the 1970s.
Jeff Pink, founder of nail polish company Orly, is credited with coining the name in 1978, although it is the cosmetics company Max Factor that is believed to have invented the style in the 1930s.
The term French here is due to Max Factor's claim that he first created the manicure for fashion forward women in Paris France.
However, in a way, it was Jeff Pink who created the first French manicure kit and made it a mainstream look. Pink also said that it was his practice of painting the nails of Parisian women that gave rise to the term.
Despite differences of opinion regarding the origin of the name, it wasn't long before French Manicure began to take over in Hollywood, and eventually throughout the US, and then the rest of the world.
Interestingly, the French themselves borrowed the name when they adopted the look, calling it la French manucure.
