Indonesia has a variety of traditional spas as typical Indonesian spa relaxation.

This was revealed at the 2023 Indonesia Wellness Tourism International Festival (IWTIF) with the theme Ethnowellness Spa, Indonesian Relaxation.

Curious about what's there? Let's take a look!

1. Bakera Minahasa

Bakera is a body care ritual for women after giving birth and helps with birth spacing, or as a natural birth control method known as the Bakancing technique.

The balance between 'hot and cold elements' in the human body is a healthy concept for the Minahasa community.

If one or both of these elements are missing from the human body, they can be replaced with 'hot and cold elements' taken from nature.

"The philosophy is from the hot and cold elements," said Dr. Wanarani Aries, Sp. KFR-K.

The treatment stages themselves start with scrubbing to remove dirt and dead skin cells from the body.

After that, steaming is carried out to remove toxins from the body and provide a relaxing effect on the muscles and joints.

Then continue with massage and body mask to nourish the skin and end with soaking in natural spices that add a relaxing and rejuvenating effect to the body.

2. Batangeh Minang

Batangeh is a traditional spa of the Minangkabau tribe.

This treatment is done by boiling water and spices in a stove and placing it on a chair.

Then, the woman who will do the spa, sits on the chair covered with a sarong or mat.

Not only by boiling, spices can also be evaporated directly. The method is that the spices are put into a pan that has been heated with artificial steam at a predetermined temperature.

The Minang people use this traditional treatment to treat sick people or care for people who have just recovered from illness.

To do Batangeh, the spices used are betel leaves, lime leaves, purut leaves, siliwangi leaves, cinnamon, pandan leaves, ginger, lemongrass, ylang-ylang flowers, lampu-lamp leaves, and rose leaves.

3. Kusuk Batak

The Batak tribe from North Sumatra has a special spa technique that has been passed down from generation to generation called Kusuk.

There are three basic concepts that must be done in performing Kusuk Spa Batak. Namely, the part that is massaged must be the main target organ, using plants from nature that contain hot, fresh, and cold elements, and approaching God through spells and mantras.

Kusuk Spa Batak is a traditional massage or spa typical of the Batak Tribe that has many purposes according to needs.

This Kusuk treatment can be for pregnant women, the birthing process, the condition of the mother after giving birth, the growth and development of children, women and men before marriage, and to cure people who are possessed.

In addition, Kusuk can also be for people who have a fever, to cure people who have accidents and broken bones, to refresh the body, and people who have difficulty meeting a soul mate. All of these treatments are accompanied by Tup, Oukup, or Tangas which is a process of evaporation or steam.

4. Tangas Betawi

Tangas consists of several series, starting from massage, body scrub to steam bath.

This native tribe of Jakarta mixes various natural ingredients for this routine, namely kantil flowers, jasmine, roses, ginger, lime, pandan and Betawi tangas oil.

The Tangas routine is also usually complemented by drinking Betawi pletok beer.

5. Bedda Lotong Bugis

Bedda lotong is often used as a traditional treatment using black powder.

Made from a mixture of black glutinous rice, ginseng, lime and pandan leaves.

It has quite a lot of benefits, namely brightening the skin to making hair look shiny black.

6. Javanese Lulur

Lulur has another name, namely ngadiro saliro, which means a beauty ritual for the king's daughter.

Javanese people will add natural ingredients to make a body scrub, such as rice, kencur, turmeric and jicama.

7. Balinese Boreh

Balinese Boreh has the properties to remove toxins from the body or as a detoxification thanks to the variety of spices that contain many good nutrients.

This treatment can be done by anyone, but it is not recommended for pregnant women or those with sensitive skin.

Judging from the main ingredients needed for this boreh spa treatment, they are spices, such as beras kencur, galangal, cloves, and nutmeg.

These ingredients can be combined with other spices such as cinnamon, turmeric, and temu kunci.

"The techniques include acupressure, skin rolling, and hard and soft stroking," said Dr. Wanarani.

8. So'oso Madura

This traditional so'oso spa from Madura uses egg protein to exfoliate, so it can improve the health of the body's skin.

In addition to being massaged, women who do so'oso spa will also drink typical Madurese herbal medicine after treatment.

9. Batimung Banjar

Reporting from the journal Naditira Widya Vol. 12 No.2 (2018) published by the South Kalimantan Archaeological Center, Batimung Ki This is one of the requirements for prospective brides and grooms before getting married.

Steam bath or batimung consists of various herbal concoctions such as galangal leaves, dilam, pudak, lemongrass, lime, and flowers such as roses, jasmine, cananga, cempaka and others.
